Cardiff Marine Surveyors
and Consultants was founded by John Julian, who is their chief surveyor.
John is a member of the
Royal Institute of Naval Architects having completed a degree in Naval Architect at Newcastle University before taking an M.Sc. in Shipping Operations and Management. He is also a founding member of British Marine Surveyors, Europe (BMSE) which is a surveyor’s forum and the MECAL representative in South and West Wales
John has over 30 years experience
in the marine industry in which he has undertaken a wide variety of projects such as producing Lloyd’s Approved cargo
loading instruments for merchant vessels, designing an automatic ballast control system for a pipe laying ship, developing a program to calculate the strength of lashing systems in container vessels, installing equipment on ships throughout the world and working with marine satellite communications systems.
John has a life long interest
in boats and sailing and owns the Scottish fishing boat Progress ex KY 143. Progress
is a Fife built in 1915 and given
her age she was in poor condition so John has systematically re-built her from the keel up.
This and other projects have given him considerable experience in the building and repair of boats and yachts.
John took up marine surveying
as it allowed him to make use of his Naval Architecture knowledge and his practical boat building skills. As there are an increasing number of regulations governing the maritime industry, John supplemented this knowledge by studying for a Diploma in Small Craft
Surveying run by the Lloyds
Maritime Academy. He is also a graduate of the renown
“Practical Yacht and Small Craft Survey Course” run by the International Boatbuilding Training College which was designed in conjunction with the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA).
